https://www.thenation.com/article/this-town-is-sick-of-drinking-polluted-water/ Image from: shutterstock.com Uniontown is one of the poorest cities in Alabama, and the city lacks clean water. Residents have been demanding clean water, but unfortunately no serious action has been taken on the issue. The people have seen brown water come out of the faucets, and have resorted to using bottled water for now. Although the city's name is Uniontown, ironically it lacks unity. The region is termed as the" black belt" of Alabama as 90 percent of the citizens are African Americans, and some components of slavery still exist there . Some think that the government is ignoring the city's polluted water due to the high population of African Americans. In other words, institutionalized racism is taking place. I think that the city really needs clean water for which the city and\or state government must take an initiative. Clean water is a basic necessity which the city residents are not receiving unfortunately. As far as the matter of racial divide is concerned, I believe that the water problem does reflect this divide. Also, it shows how although the US is a greatly developed country, some areas have devastating environmental problems. The government must make environmental issues priorities rather than overlooking them.
