Salty Seeds Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to determine the salt concentration at which a plant species will show the initial effects of salinization as well as the salt concentrations at which seeds can germinate in. We conducted an experiment in which we made different levels of concentrated salt water and placed plant seeds in each solution. We observed the growth of the seeds for four days and recorded our data to reach a conclusion. Materials:
Procedure:
Results: After manipulating the independent variable, the salt concentration of each solution, and comparing the experimental petri dishes to the control, we concluded that the poppy seeds showed initial effects of salinization at 1% NaCl. Although seeds were still germinating in the 1% NaCl solution, the sprouts were much smaller and therefore, indicated the initial effects of salinization. Our results concluded that the seeds successfully germinated in the .5% solution because on day 4 a 70% germination rate was yielded while the 3.5% solution had no germinating seeds. From this, it can be concluded that California Red Poppy seeds cannot germinate in 3.5% NaCl and barely germinate in 2.5% NaCl. Data: Available in document attached Conclusion/Discussion: Our group results to this lab seemed to have turned out a success. Only five of our solutions have yielded germinating seeds to at most seven out of ten, and the least being one out of ten. The last two solutions took the longest to germinate, but the seeds in the last solution (3.5 %) seemed to not have germinated at all out of the four days we grew them. If we were to repeat this lab over, the parts that my group would change would probably be making sure that the paper towel does not hang outside of the petri dish because our 0.5% solution evaporated the second day causing us to make a new solution. Our participation in this lab focuses towards the audience of farmers, fellow environmentalists, and scientists. This lab report focuses heavily on how much the soil is salinized. If the soil has a high concentration of salt, it won’t be able to grow any plants, and if the soil has a low concentration, it will probably grow more plants. Our data and our lab that we conducted is important to the farmers because it helps them know what types of seed they can grow in their soil. We have concluded from our data that a small amount of salt concentration, 1.0% or less, in the soil is effective for seeds to germinate. A higher concentration of salt will result in little or no germinated seeds. Farmers will have to water down their soil, in order for their crops to grow or find an area of land where the soil is highly salinized. This is why our results in this lab are important to not only us, but our audience as well. Realizing the importance of maintaining an appropriate level of salinity in water will increase farmers’ success in growing plants and thus, benefit everyone. The population of Honolulu can be classified as somewhat stable. The population pyramid is stationary as there is not substantial growth or decline in the population.
The population pyramid is constrictive because it displays lower populations of children. San Francisco is an urban city with most of the population in the age range of 20 to 60 year-olds. This is probably because of the cultural environment of the location. There is a low birth-rate.
The population is declining in Dallas, Texas with some inconsistencies. This is a constrictive population pyramid.
The population pyramid shows a declining population. The pyramid is constrictive as there are lower percentages of younger people.
The population is quite stable overall. However, there seems to be a higher female population as the age range increases.
The population pyramid depicts an unstable population. The population pyramid can most closely be classified as constrictive because there is a small population of younger people. Emigration and immigration seem to have a large affect on the population.
The population is declining gradually, and the population pyramid is constrictive.
